About Mountain Top Pond

Mountain Top Pond is a natural pond located at an elevation of about 1300 ft on our woodland property in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. Our desire in creating the pond was to capture the Oregon winter rainfall and use it to provide an aquadic habitat for all sorts of living things. We use no pumps or other artificial means of supplying oxygen or providing filtration. Plants and the natural biological cycle accompanying plant and microbe growth, life and decay provide the ecological balance we seek for our pond. We use largely native aquatic and border plants, but not exclusively. Goldfish were added early on for mosquito control, to enhance the natural balance and to give us an indication of pond health. Our hope is to add native fish sometime in the future. We are learning as we go and find great pleasure in the experience of creating a sustainable aquatic environment.
